The Hidden Danger in Your Home? Unmasking the Toxicity of the Mexican plum Plant.
1
All components of the Mexican plum plant, excluding the fruit's pulp, possess lethal cyanide precursors.
2
Cyanide gas develops when gastric acid reacts with the seeds or foliage of the Mexican plum, resulting in toxicity.
3
Indications of cyanide intoxication from Mexican plum encompass feebleness, muscle contractions, and ultimately demise.
Is Mexican plum toxic to humans?
Mexican plum, similar to almost all plants in the *Prunus* genus, contains cyanide precursors in all its components, including its seeds, with the only exception being the fruit. If a person consumes the seeds, leaves, or any other part of the plant besides the fruit's pulp, these cyanotoxins will transform into cyanide gas upon contact with stomach acid. This gas is absorbed through mucous membranes, leading to poisoning. Symptoms escalate from restlessness to feebleness, impaired coordination and muscle spasms, trouble with movement or speech, decelerated breathing and heart rate, and ultimately, fatality.
