Dyer's polypore

Phaeolus schweinitzii

A species of Phaeolus. Also known as Dyer's mazegill.

This perennial shelf fungus, found on live conifers, has the potential to be fatal to its host if not addressed. As its name implies, dyer's polypore is capable of yielding dyes for yarn, offering a spectrum of colors from yellow to orange to brown. The final shade is determined by the mushroom's age and the type of metal used during processing. It is not considered suitable for consumption.
