Signs of Cold Stress in Witch hazel
Symptoms
Witch hazel tolerates cold well and flourishes when temperatures exceed 50℉. In winter, maintain temperatures above 32℉. If temperatures drop below 14℉, while no immediate winter changes may be apparent, branches can become brittle and dry by spring, with no new growth appearing.
Solutions
In spring, remove any dead branches that have not produced new foliage.
Signs of Heat Stress in Witch hazel
Symptoms
During summer, Witch hazel should be kept below 77℉. When temperatures surpass 86℉, the plant's leaves may lighten in hue, their tips may dry and shrivel, and the plant becomes more prone to sun damage.
Solutions
Cut off the sun-damaged and dried sections. Relocate the plant to a spot offering protection from the midday and afternoon sun, or use a shade cloth for cover. Water the plant in the morning and evening to maintain soil moisture.
