Signs of Cold Stress in Desert christmas cactus
Symptoms
Desert christmas cactus flourishes in warm conditions and cannot withstand cold. Optimal growth occurs when temperatures exceed 70℉. In winter, maintain temperatures above 50℉. If temperatures drop below 30℉, the plant may weaken, droop, and become susceptible to root decay. Minor frost damage might not show immediate signs, but the plant will progressively decline after about a week.
Solutions
Remove frost-damaged sections, checking for root rot. If roots are rotted, excise them, and the plant can be propagated from cuttings. Promptly relocate indoors to a warm setting, positioning the plant near a south-facing window for abundant light. If natural light is inadequate, provide supplementary illumination.
Signs of Heat Stress in Desert christmas cactus
Symptoms
In summer, Desert christmas cactus should be kept below 85℉. When temperatures surpass 100℉, the plant's development will halt, it will dehydrate, wilt, and be more prone to sun damage.
Solutions
Prune off sunburnt and decayed portions. Protect the plant from direct afternoon sun until it recovers and resumes growth. For plants with root rot, cease watering until new roots start to form.
