Surprise webcap

Cortinarius semisanguineus

A species of Cortinar. Also known as Red-gilled webcap.

The Surprise Webcap (Cortinarius semisanguineus) lives up to its name, with its rather unassuming yellow or beige cap concealing a striking secret: vibrant, ruby or maroon-red gills beneath. Though not safe for consumption, this mushroom is still prized for its ability to yield a rich and beautiful red-brown dye.

Is Surprise webcap Toxic?

This unexpected webcap mushroom may harbor perilous toxins, posing a health risk if ingested. Its appearance strongly mimics certain red Cortinarius species, which are known carriers of orellanine, a substance detrimental to human kidneys and liver. Identifying specific species within the extensive Cortinarius genus proves difficult due to their numerous shared features. Typically found in mycorrhizal association with conifers, particularly pine trees, it usually appears singly or in small groups, frequently nestled in moss, throughout North America during the summer and autumn seasons.
