Signs of Cold Stress in Chihuahuan fishhook cactus
Symptoms
Chihuahuan fishhook cactus flourishes in warm conditions and does not tolerate cold. Optimal growth occurs when temperatures exceed 70℉. In winter, maintain temperatures above 50℉. If temperatures drop below 30℉, the plant may weaken, droop, and be susceptible to root decay. Minor frost damage might not show immediate signs, but the plant will progressively decline after about a week.
Solutions
Remove any frost-damaged sections, checking for root rot. If roots are rotted, trim them and consider propagating new plants from cuttings. Immediately relocate the plant indoors to a warm spot, positioning it near a south-facing window for ample light. Supplement with artificial lighting if natural light is insufficient.
Signs of Heat Stress in Chihuahuan fishhook cactus
Symptoms
In summer, Chihuahuan fishhook cactus should be kept below 80℉. When temperatures surpass 90℉, the plant will stop growing, dehydrate, wilt, and become more vulnerable to sun damage.
Solutions
Prune off any sunburnt or decayed sections. Protect the plant from direct afternoon sun until it recovers and resumes growth. For plants with root rot, cease watering until new root development is observed.
