Signs of Cold Stress in Japanese barberry
Symptoms
Japanese barberry tolerates cold well and flourishes optimally when temperatures exceed 60℉. In winter, it needs to stay above 50℉. If the temperature drops below 40℉, while winter might show no immediate effects, branches can become fragile and desiccated by spring, with no new growth appearing.
Solutions
In spring, remove any lifeless branches that haven't produced fresh foliage.
Signs of Heat Stress in Japanese barberry
Symptoms
During summer, Japanese barberry should be maintained below 75℉. When temperatures surpass 85℉, the plant's leaves might lighten in hue, their tips could dry and shrivel, and the plant becomes more prone to sun damage.
Solutions
Remove any sun-damaged and dried sections. Relocate the plant to a spot offering protection from midday and afternoon sun, or use a shade fabric for cover. Water the plant in the morning and evening to maintain soil moisture.
