Beech knight

Tricholoma sciodes

A species of Tricholoma.

The Beech Knight mushroom is commonly found alongside beech trees, forming a mutually beneficial partnership. This fungus is recognized by its unique greyish, textured cap, which often brings to mind a knight's armor and is probably the origin of its name. Its white gills, located on the underside of the cap, are typically quite dense. Below ground, the Beech Knight develops a network of fine filaments that merge with the tree roots, aiding in the exchange of nutrients.
