Despite its distinct appearance, characterized by a spiny underside and an unadorned cap, the mushroom known as the depressed hedgehog (Hydnum umbilicatum) shares a close kinship with chanterelles. This particular species is indigenous to the deciduous woodlands of both North America and Europe.
