Rounded earthstar
Geastrum saccatum
A species of Earthstars. Also known as Sessile earthstar.
Before realizing its true nature, one might easily perceive this fungus as an unusual bloom. The rounded earthstar (Geastrum saccatum) features a spherical or ovoid core encircled by several outwardly unfolding lobes that bear a faint resemblance to floral petals. Similar to puffballs, a gentle press on the mushroom's central structure can visibly discharge a plume of spores. Rounded earthstars are adaptable to various environments and can be found worldwide. While visually intriguing, they are not deemed suitable for consumption.
