Gassy webcap

Cortinarius traganus

A species of Cortinar. Also known as Pungent cort.

The Cortinarius traganus, frequently known as the Lilac Webcap, often displays a delicate purple shade on its stem and cap. This species, however, can be differentiated from other purple-tinged fungi by its deep yellow-brown interior, visible upon slicing the mushroom. Lilac Webcaps inhabit moist, moderate environments throughout North America and Europe and are deemed inedible.

Is Gassy webcap Toxic?

While the Gassy Webcap mushroom, often found near conifers, has no known toxins, prudence is recommended due to its familial ties within the Cortinarius genus, which includes dangerously poisonous members. Furthermore, historical accounts have linked the consumption of various webcap species to digestive discomfort. Although initially emitting a pleasant, pear-like scent in its youth, this aroma deteriorates into an unpleasant one with age. Consequently, refraining from ingesting the Gassy Webcap is the safest course of action to avert potential health complications.
