Signs of Cold Stress in Potato
Symptoms
Potato tolerates cool conditions moderately well, flourishing optimally between 55℉ and 77℉. In colder months, maintain temperatures above 50℉. If temperatures drop below 40℉, foliage may darken. Extreme cold can lead to water-soaked tissue death, wilting, drooping, and a gradual browning of leaves.
Solutions
Remove any parts damaged by frost. Promptly relocate the plant indoors to a warmer spot or construct a temporary greenhouse for protection from cold. When indoors, position it near a south-facing window for adequate light. If natural light is insufficient, provide artificial illumination.
Signs of Heat Stress in Potato
Symptoms
In summer, Potato should be maintained below 77℉. When temperatures surpass 86℉, plant development slows, leaf coloration lightens, and susceptibility to sun damage increases.
Solutions
Remove any sun-scorched and desiccated portions. Relocate the plant to an area offering protection from the afternoon sun. Water the plant in the morning and evening to maintain soil moisture.
