Skunk-bush sumac tolerates cold well and flourishes when temperatures are above 60℉. In winter, it needs to stay above 50℉. If temperatures drop below 30℉, while no immediate changes might be seen in winter, branches can become brittle and dry by spring, with no new growth appearing.
Solutions
In spring, remove any dead branches that haven't produced new foliage.
Signs of Heat Stress in Skunk-bush sumac
Symptoms
In summer, Skunk-bush sumac should be maintained below 75℉. When temperatures surpass 85℉, the plant's leaves might lighten in hue, their tips could dry and shrivel, and the plant becomes more prone to sun damage.
Solutions
Remove any sun-damaged and desiccated sections. Relocate the plant to a spot offering protection from the midday and afternoon sun, or use a shade fabric to provide cover. Irrigate the plant in the morning and evening to maintain soil moisture.
