Signs of Cold Stress in Japanese red cedar
Symptoms
Japanese red cedar tolerates cold well and flourishes optimally when temperatures exceed 50℉. In winter, it should be maintained above 32℉. If the temperature drops below 20℉, while no immediate changes might be apparent in winter, branches can become brittle and dry by spring, with no new growth appearing.
Solutions
In spring, remove any dead branches that have not produced new foliage.
Signs of Heat Stress in Japanese red cedar
Symptoms
During summer, Japanese red cedar should be kept below 77℉. When temperatures surpass 86℉, the plant's leaves may lighten in hue, tips might dry and shrivel, and the plant becomes more prone to sun damage.
Solutions
Remove any sun-damaged and desiccated sections. Relocate the plant to a spot offering protection from the midday and afternoon sun, or use a shade cloth. Water the plant in the morning and evening to maintain soil moisture.
