Signs of Cold Stress in Japanese maple
Symptoms
Japanese maple tolerates cold well and flourishes when temperatures are above 68℉. In winter, it needs to stay above 59℉. If the temperature drops below 50℉, while no immediate winter changes might be seen, branches can become fragile and dry by spring, preventing new growth.
Solutions
In spring, remove any dead branches that haven't produced new foliage.
Signs of Heat Stress in Japanese maple
Symptoms
During summer, Japanese maple should be kept below 86℉. When temperatures go above 95℉, the plant's leaves might lighten, tips could dry and shrivel, and it becomes more prone to sun damage.
Solutions
Remove any sun-damaged and desiccated sections. Relocate the plant to a spot offering protection from the midday and afternoon sun, or use a shade fabric. Water the plant in the morning and evening to maintain soil moisture.
