Signs of Cold Stress in Bigleaf maple
Symptoms
Bigleaf maple tolerates cold well and flourishes when temperatures are above 60℉. In winter, it needs to stay above 50℉. If temperatures drop below 40℉, while no immediate winter changes might be seen, branches can become brittle and dry by spring, with no new growth appearing.
Solutions
In spring, remove any dead branches that haven't produced new leaves.
Signs of Heat Stress in Bigleaf maple
Symptoms
In summer, Bigleaf maple should be maintained below 75℉. When temperatures go above 85℉, the plant's leaves might lighten in color, tips could dry and shrivel, and it becomes more prone to sunburn.
Solutions
Cut off any sunburned and dried sections. Relocate the plant to a spot offering protection from midday and afternoon sun, or use a shade cloth for cover. Water the plant in the morning and evening to maintain soil moisture.
