Hesperocyparis lusitanica (Hesperocyparis lusitanica)
Also known as: Mexican Cypress, Cedar of Goa
Hesperocyparis lusitanica, also known as the Mexican cypress, cedar-of-Goa or Goa cedar, is a cypress species that originates from Mexico and Central America, including countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. The tree can also be found in Belize, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua where it thrives at elevations between 1,200 and 3,000 meters. Its scientific name, lusitanica, alludes to its early cultivation in Portugal. In fact, plants were transferred from Mexico to a monastery at Buçaco, near Coimbra in Portugal around the year 1634. When the species was botanically classified by Miller in 1768, these trees had already surpassed 130 years of age. In Mexico, this species is also identified as cedro blanco, translating to 'white cedar', or teotlate.
